Instagram went down globally for some hours, services now restored

By India Today and Siam Rath

INSTAGRAM went down in several parts of the world due to unclear issues today (Sept. 2) including here in Thailand but services are now running again, India Today and Siam Rath newspaper said.

According to Downdetector, the platform that keeps track of internet outages, the Instagram services went down at around 11.30 a.m. IST (Indian Standard Time, 1 p.m. in Thailand) , while the reports about the outage peaked at around 12.30 p.m. IST (2 p.m. in Thailand).

Thai netizens were upset after Instagram developed problems and they were not able to post photos and stories with this leading to the Thai hashtag #IGdown trending on Twitter.

Thais noticed that the problem developed at 12.15 p.m. Thai time (10.45 a.m. in India) without any clarification from the agency.

India seemed to be the worst hit by the outage, with swaths of consumers reporting they were not able to access Instagram in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Facebook did not publicly acknowledge the issue, but Instagram’s parent company started to fix the issue nearly two hours after the issue first emerged.

The problem behind the outage is not clear because Facebook did not address the issue publicly. But the company seems to have begun fixing it because Downdetector showed a steep fall in the number of outage reports at least 20 minutes since the time of updating this article. The maximum reports arrived at around 12.30 p.m. with a peak of over 3,500 cases getting registered on Downdetector.

Instagram’s outage was widespread and affected several services on the platform. According to a few Instagram users, who took to Twitter and Downdetector’s forum to report problems, the feed was not getting refreshed, the DMs were not working, and profiles were making an error when someone was trying to access them. Initially, people thought there was some issue with their internet connection, but people began to report issues in no time. Some even tried deleting and reinstalling the Instagram app but nothing worked because the problem was probably server-side.

India Today able to independently verify that Instagram was not responding. Not only the DMs and photo feed, but the Reels were also not working and giving an error that the feed could not be refreshed.

However, at around 2.10 p.m. (3.40 p.m. in Thailand), Instagram resumed services on both Android and iOS platforms, allowing users to access the photo feed and send DMs. Instagram Live and Instagram Reels were also back up and running fine.

Internet outages like this have become quite common now because of some glitches in how these services are made available to users. Although companies such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter try their best to bring services back up, sometimes the amount of time taken for the restoration of services is more than expected.

For instance, the infamous outage that Google experienced last year, leaving all its services kaput for several hours. Then, earlier this year, the failure of two different content delivery networks (CDNs) broke more than half the Internet.
