DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER Prawit Wongsuwan was today (Dec. 20) held responsible for Thailand having been banned from flying its flag during a world badminton tournament which Thai athletes have won.
Move Forward MP Suttawan Suban na Ayutthaya in her Facebook post blamed Prawit, who concurrently chairs the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, for having allegedly failed to fix Thai athletes’ reported violation of the rules of the World Anti-Doping Agency which has practically punished Thailand by banning the raising and flying of the national flag on the pole above a couple of Thai badminton players who won yesterday’s mixed-double final at the Total Energies BWF World Championships 2021 in Spain.
The MP of Nakhon Pathom commented that Thailand has compromised its national prestige due to the Thai authorities’ apparent failure to address the doping issue which has subsequently led to a refusal to fly the Thai flag despite the hard-earned victory scored by Dechapol Poorwaranukhro and Sapsiri Taeratanachai in the mixed-double badminton final.
The Badminton Association of Thailand’s flag fluttered in place of the national flag, however.
The opposition MP took the deputy premier to task for allegedly having failed to see to it that laws and regulations were implemented and amended in support of measures against suspected dopers among all Thai athletes.
Suttawan said such an “embarrassing” phenomenon might probably be repeated with the Thai national soccer team currently contesting Asean rivals for AFF Suzuki Cup 2020.Â
She said the Thai flag will likely be denied from flying above the Thai soccer team, dubbed the War Elephants, even if they win in the final as well.
