Chadchart confirms he is attending concert at Wat Don cemetery tomorrow

BANGKOK Governor Chadchart Sittipunt today (June 25) confirmed that he will be attending a concert at Tio Chew Association park, aka Wat Don cemetery, in Sathorn from 4 p.m. onwards tomorrow while reassuring the public that this place is no longer spooky, TV Channel 7 and MNG Online said.

The park-cum-cemetery covers around 105 rai of land and is widely believed to be haunted, according to Wikipedia.

It was founded in 1899 and  actually consists of adjacent cemeteries managed by three organisations, namely Tio Chew Association of Thailand, Poh Teck Tung Foundation and Hainan Dan Family Association. In 1996, the district administration began renovating the derelict site, and part of the cemetery now also serves as a public park

“The Tio Chew Association is not an ordinary place, in fact it is actually Wat Don cemetery where tens of thousands of people who are lying underground will be joining us in listening to the music.

“They are our forebears and we respect them. But this is an unbelievable and amazing place,” he said.

Tomorrow’s concert has been organised by Ajarn Sukree Charoensuk Foundation with PGVIM Percussion Ensemble, PGVIM Symphonic Band and a band from Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music playing.

Meanwhile Bangkok’s Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsangboon said the Thai Film Directors Association had mentioned that Bangkok administration had of late rarely allowed the shooting of movies in the capital and that is why Bangkok infrequently features in the background of films.

However Bangkok has bounced back and people are now informed they can shoot movies here, he added.
