PARLIAMENT President and incumbent Speaker of House of Representatives Mr. Chuan Leekpai was rushed to Ramathibodi Hospital at 5 p.m. yesterday (June 28) for fever and chills and underwent an examination and was expected to be admitted for thorough tests, Sanook.com said.
Initially his personal physician said his symptoms were not worrisome.
He had advised Chuan, 83, to see him immediately if he again suffered from this condition as he had had them many times before.
However yesterday morning Chuan attended a merit making on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the National Assembly which was established following the Revolution of Siam in 1932.
Previously he served as the Thai prime minister from September 20, 1992 to May 19, 1995 and again from November 9, 1997 to February 9, 2001.
As the leader of the Democrat Party, Chuan was elected in 1992 after the abortive coup by General Suchinda Kraprayoon, thus becoming Thailand’s first prime minister to come to power without either aristocratic or military backing.
His first administration consisted of a five-party coalition participated by the Democrat, New Aspiration, Palang Dhamma, Social Action, and Social Unity parties until he was defeated in the 1995 election, but he assumed power in late-1997 following the fall of the Chavalit Yongchaiyudh administration, which was held responsible for the economic crisis that beset Thailand in 1997
