A BALCONY extension of a townhouse in Nonthaburi province suddenly collapsed this afternoon (July 6) injuring a teen girl who had dropped by to visit the owner’s daughter, Matichon newspaper said.
Upon arriving at the Chuan Chuen Modus Centro estate in Soi Chaengwattana-Pak Kret 41, Pol. Lt. Col. Nattapon Inruangsorn found large metal beams and slabs of concrete piled on top of the front yard of the three-storey townhouse. Beneath the rubble was Ms. Grace (surname withheld), 18, trapped under a concrete panel that lay across her right leg.
Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescuers quickly freed her and took her to Mongkut Watthana Hospital for treatment.
Moreover a sedan parked there had also been damaged by the rubble.
The property’s owner, Ms. Yosang Sapromruen, 49, said Grace had come over to meet her daughter Ms. Tosand, 18, and then invited her to run some errands.
Just as the two of them walked out of the townhouse to get into a waiting taxi, with Tonsang in front and Grace following behind, the balcony extension suddenly gave way, trapping the latter.
She added that this extension was built around 10 years ago on top of the car park’s roof to use to dry clothes. However it was rarely used with there previously being no problem with the structure.
Yosang mentioned that she was on the second floor when she heard a loud noise and upon quickly coming out saw that her daughter’s friend had been injured and immediately called for help.
Neighbours too came to help but it was the rescuers who finally freed her.
X-rays showed no broken bones and Yosang said she would cover all medical expenses.
Pol. Lt. Col. Nattapon Inruangsorn said it was likely that the metal beams were unable to support the concrete slabs causing the structure to rip away. An insurance company’s surveyor will be coming to assess the damage tomorrow.
