RAMKHAMHAENG University issued an announcement on its Facebook page today (July 21) cancelling lectures at both its campuses for a day after continuous all-night rain led to flooding inside and outside the compound, Naewna newspaper said.
Students were told both the campus at Ramkhamhaeng road and the one in Bangna had been affected.
Khlong Saen Saep Express Boat Service too halted its operation till noon today because rising water level from continuous rain made it impossible for boats to pass through the bridge at Wat Sri Boonruang.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt livestreamed his inspection of key flooded areas while driving through the floodwaters with Drainage and Sewerage Department officials immediately after the heavy downpour started last evening.
Among the areas he checked and tried to resolve problems were Ratchadaphisek, Asoke Montri and Pracha Songkhro roads, Srinakharinwirot University in Sukhumvit Soi 23 and the area around Din Daeng Clock Tower.
During his inspection he saw that flooding in Ratchada, Asoke and Sukhumvit areas was so high small cars could not go through with many people stuck at various bus stops unable to travel home,
He commented that he had never seen Khlong Saen Saeb canal this high for a very long time with water almost overflowing to the footpath.
Meanwhile the Meteorological Department said an active monsoon trough lying across the North has run into a low-pressure cell hanging over the Northeast. At the same time, a moderate southwesterly monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.
More rain is likely across the whole country with isolated heavy to very heavy showers looming in the North, the Northeast, the Central region including Bangkok and its vicinity, the East and the South. People should beware of severe conditions that may trigger flash floods and overflows.
A moderate magnitude 3.9 earthquake also occurred 5.8 kilometres southeast of Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam at 11.15 a.m. this morning with there being no time difference between the two countries. There was light shaking near the epicentre.
