MYANMAR citizens joined by Thais held a protest amid the rain in front of the Myanmar embassy on Sathorn road this afternoon (July 26) over the execution of four political activists by the junta yesterday, Matichon newspaper said.
The protesters released a statement condemning the execution of democracy campaigner Kyaw Min Yu, better known as Jimmy, a former lawmaker and hip-hop artist Phyo Zeya Thaw, an ally of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi, Hla Myo Aung and Aung Thura Zaw.
The large number of protesters overflowed the footpath in front of the embassy onto the road leading to barricades being put up. Some protesters also stood at the bridge leading to St Louis BTS station.
The protesters wave Myanmar flags of various sizes with some wearing red headbands or hats several of which either had the abbreviations NLD or NUG embossed on them or some text in Myanmar language. The former stands for National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi who has been imprisoned and the latter the shadow National Unity Government which is leading efforts to undermine the junta’s attempts to rule Myanmar.
Speeches condemning the executions were given through megaphone after which the protesters sang some songs and gave the three-finger salute. Protesters shouted some English words mixed with Myanmar language with the word democracy cropping up several times.
Later it started raining but the protesters stayed put, some used umbrellas they had brought along but others got drenched.
