Thai woman is the country’s 4th monkeypox case, 2 others exposed

THE PUBLIC Health Ministry confirmed today (August 5) that a 22-year-old Thai woman who frequently visited entertainment venues popular with foreigners in Bangkok has caught monkeypox, thus becoming the country’s fourth case of this infectious viral disease, Naewna newspaper said.

Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, head of the Disease Control Department, said there are two Thai men at high-risk of getting infected with both sharing a house with this patient.

The unnamed fourth monkeypox patient likely caught the disease from a foreign man with whom she had close contact and this is being followed up.

The patient, who visited entertainment venues in Bangkok around once a week and had close contact with foreign men, developed fever on July 29 but despite this still went to an entertainment venue with some Thai and foreign friends.

The next day blisters appeared on her limbs and spread throughout her body including the genitals.

On August 3 she was admitted to a hospital in Samut Prakan province with tests by this department and Chulalongkorn University’s Emerging Infectious Diseases Health Science Centre confirming monkeypox infection.

Yesterday, August 4, she was transferred to Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute for further treatment.

The patient is both the country’s fourth monkeypox case and the first woman to get infected.  The first case was a Nigerian man in Phuket, the second a Thai man in Bangkok and third a German man in Phuket.
