French tourist cleared of monkeypox in one test

TRAT provincial authorities revealed this evening (August 7) that the French tourist suspected of having caught monkeypox has been cleared of the disease in one test with confirmation of the second test expected tomorrow, Naewna newspaper

Mr. Surachai Jeamkul, deputy public health doctor at this province, said blood tests were conducted by the Public Health Ministry’s Disease Control Department and Chulalongkorn University’s Emerging Infectious Diseases Health Science Centre.

While the department had confirmed that the tourist was not infected with monkeypox, the result from the Chulalongkorn University’s centre will be out tomorrow.

It had been feared that he would become the country’s fifth monkeypox case.

The 32-year-old tourist has been in the country for sometime now and travelled to many provinces including Phuket, Pattaya and Trat.

He is currently quarantined at a room in Trat Hospital and is under close supervision of doctors and nurses since his admission at 10 p.m. last Friday.

He did have contact with strangers two to three times and has been receiving treatment for herpes at an unnamed medical facility over the past month. However as his condition did not improve he went to Bangkok Hospital Trat for treatment and was then transferred to Trat Hospital.

Surachai urged Trat residents to not panic as monkeypox can only be contracted through direct contact with blisters and respiratory and other secretions plus touching clothing and bedding.
