CARETAKER Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan contacted Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt by hotline today (August 27) to help prepare for flooding in the capital during the current rainy season with soldiers being sent to fill sandbags and build flood walls, Matichon newspaper said this evening.
Gen. Prawit, in his capacity as Deputy Prime Minister, is in charge of the country’s water management.
He told Chadchart that the government was concerned about Bangkok residents and was willing to help the capital with all issues that arise while also giving his direct telephone number to the Bangkok Governor to immediately contact him.
On Monday August 29 altogether 50 soldiers are coming to help the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) with flood prevention. They have been divided into two teams with 25 troops being assigned to help the Drainage Bureau fill sandbags and stack them.
These sandbags will be filled and stacked at two points with one being at the park beneath Taksin bridge which is being utilised after getting permission from the Rural Road Department to do so. From 9.30 a.m. onwards 16,000 sandbags will be filled with 20 officials from the Drainage Bureau helping out.
The second point is on the Thonburi side of the capital where likewise on Monday 8,000 to 10,000 sandbags will be filled at the naval dockyard on Arun Amarin road to build a hundred-metre-long flood prevention wall.
