CHONBURI’S Deputy Police Chief was transferred to the provincial headquarters pending investigation into charges of accepting one million baht bribe to help the real suspects in a crime case escape and allow two proxies to face the charges in their place, Thai Rath newspaper said this evening (Oct. 31).
Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Lt. Gen. Surachate Hakparn, whose nickname is Big Joke, together with Pol. Lt. Gen. Itthipol Ittisarnronnachai, commander of Provincial Police Region 2, and other senior officers said Pol. Col. Kornwat Hanpradit has been transferred while a committee investigates serious disciplinary charges against him.
This case started when six men broke into a pool villa at Jomtien Beach to look for a debtor. Upon not finding him there, they got angry and used their firearms to shoot the tyres of the occupants’ vehicles and pistol-whipped five of them before escaping.
Upon feeling the pressure from police investigation, the debt-collecting gangsters contacted the police to surrender but it was later found out that they had sent two proxies to face charges in their stead.
In this case there are altogether 10 suspects including the six men who raided the pool villa, the two proxies they hired and two other men who made this arrangement.
Moreover the eight victims also face charges after testing positive for drug use with this indicating that the attackers and the victims knew each other and were possibly involved in drugs and gambling.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Surachet said investigation of the senior police officer will be conducted honestly so that people have confidence in Thai bureaucracy and it would be an example to other officials that if they err they would be punished.
